All About Acrylate Allergies with Dr. Brandon Adler

Deep dive into the topic of acrylate allergies with Dr. Adler of USC Keck School of Medicine

Let’s dive right in! This episode is super exciting to me and the one I’ve been waiting to drop for some time now.  I’ve been MIA for a little while dealing with some personal life matters, so I really wanted to return and start the series off fresh and really give you something to sink your teeth into.

I finally sat down with Dr. Brandon Adler, Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Dermatology, Keck School of Medicine of USC. Dr. Adler is also my dermatologist who performed my patch test that revealed my acrylate allergies. When I received my patch test in 2019, I truly didn’t know what was wrong with me. At the time, it didn’t really occur to me that my nail products were causing my array of skin issues that had prompted our visits and ultimately a patch test. I didn’t put two and two together until I finally had the breakout on my hands which was about 6-8 months into my health issues due to the allergy I was developing.

What was awesome about our time was his genuine interest in acrylate allergies but specifically the acrylates found in nail enhancement products. He wanted to know so much more about this allergy, who was developing them, and how.

Right after I received the results of my patch test I started the Facebook group and before I knew it, we grew to thousands of members all suffering the same effects from these products. After returning to his clinic for a follow up patch test (yes I’ve done it twice! - more on that another time), we ended up talking for about an hour about how my group has grown and what I was discovering. This prompted his course to conduct a survey of our group regarding home gel use. I’ll be sharing the article and break down the findings in our next episode.

So I knew that I just had to record one of our conversations for this audience.
I really feel that this interview is going to be the “must listen” to episode for everyone who ends up in my group. Because when I truly understood my own allergy, was when everything clicked into place for me. I knew how to navigate this much more easily and my skin and body thanked me.

I hope to give you all a slightly deeper understanding of what acrylates are and how they work so we stop shooting in the dark wondering why certain products work for some people and not for others. When I understood how allergies work and how mine specifically worked, made doing my nails SO much easier! And I know that’s what we’re truly here for!

Dr. Adler’s knowledge and passion is incredible. And I hope you enjoy this chat and get something out of it.
